Recent instances –

In Chattisgarh, this year, a 17-year-old boy along with his relatives, killed his parents at the behest of an agent believing that their sacrifice would cure his elder brother of mental illness.

A Nagpur couple beat their 5-year-old girl to death believing she was possessed.

A Bihar father killed his 7-year-old son to learn black magic spells.

Anti-Black Magic Laws in India –

Black magic crimes and other superstitious offenses violate the fundamental rights guaranteed by Articles 14,15 and 21 of the Indian constitution. These acts also constitute violations of several international treaties, among them the ” Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” the ” International Covenant on civil and political Rights,” and the ” Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Agents Women,” all of which India is a signatory. The state of Maharashtra became the first state to pass legislation against superstitions.

It was due to the endeavors of social activist Narendra  Dabholkar that the Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman, Evil, and Aghori parties and the Black Magic Act in 1013 was passed.

The state of Assam passed the legislation –

Assam witch hunting nill, 1015 to counter the problem of superstitions related to witch-hunting. The state of Bihar, Rajasthan, have already such laws in place but they fail to address the problem completely.

Superstition in India –

Constitutional Measures Against Superstitions –

Articles 25 and 26 provide citizens with freedom of religion and protect the interest of all religions. The 24th constitutional amendment act expects citizens to develop scientific temperament in the spirit of equality.
